Tournament Overview

In collaboration with Camberley Chess Club, Guru Nanak Gurdwara Camberley is delighted to invite competitors of all abilities to take part in the inaugural 2026 Chess Tournament, bringing sangat together in friendly competition, strategic thinking, and sportsmanship.

 

Whether you are a beginner looking to gain competitive experience or a seasoned player ready for a challenge, this tournament offers an enjoyable and welcoming environment for everyone.

 

 

Who Can Enter?

· Minimum age: 10

· Open to all skill levels

· Players must register in advance to secure a place. Maximum 60 players.

 

Is there an entry fee?

The tournament is free to enter. A suggested donation £25 collected can be on the day, if you wish to contribute to Gurdwara’s running cost.

 

 

What to Expect

• The tournament will be run by Camberley Chess Club using professional competition software

• Friendly tournament - not rated

• Rapid chess format - each player has 10 minutes plus 3 second increments per move

• Structured matches with fair pairings using the Swiss scoring system – this means all competitors will play 5 rounds

• Anticipated duration: 2.5 to 3 hours

• A supportive, respectful atmosphere

• Introductory presentation on Chess and Sikhi

• Prize giving

 

 

So what’s the connection between Chess and Sikhi?

Guru Nanak Gurdwara Camberley is dedicated to education, and it may surprise you to know that Chess appears in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji no less than six times, in four Shabads. Our Gurus used the ancient game of Kings to inspire and teach the Sangat – to know what these lessons were, you’ll need to arrive early for the presentation! (Hurry, places limited to 60).

• Registration at 1.30pm for a prompt 2pm start

• 2pm-2.30pm Introductory talk

• 2.30pm-5pm tournament

• 5.15pm prize giving
