STORY
Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh!
Guru Nanak Gurdwara Camberley is more than a building - it is a shining testament of what happens when a community comes together with love, devotion, and unshakable belief that where there is Sangat and pyar, there is Guru Ji.
For many years, Sikhs across Surrey longed for a spiritual home. A place where elders could come for peace, children could learn Sikhi with joy, youth could find guidance, and where every person - regardless of background - could come to sit in Guru Sahib's sanctuary. That hope slowly grew until one day, with Vaheguru's kirpa, it turned into action.
Build with Seva. By the Sangat. For the Sangat. With Guru Ji's Grace.
What makes this Gurdwara so special is not how it looks - but how it was built. Not be contractors, but by hands guided by devotion and humility. Not by profit, but by pyar - real, lived love.
From tradespeople to professionals, from students to seniors, from mothers, fathers, and children - every corner of the Sangat came together in seva, each offering whatever skills of time they had. Every brick and every brush stroke carries the fingerprints of the sangat.
Key Milestones That Shaped Us
December 2024 - Open Day
The sangat stepped inside the building for the very first time. The walls were bare and dust was everywhere - yet the hearts overflowed with hope.
Vaisakhi 2025 - Local Opening & 1st Prakash
Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj was respectfully brought into the Gurdwara. Shabad kirtan filled the air. Tears flowed. Surrey finally had a Gurdwara of its own.
3rd & 4th May 2025 - Grand Opening
A historic weekend of seva, kirtan, blessings and joy. Thousands of the Sangat from near and far gathered. Surrey's first Gurdwara was officially opened - built by seva, sustained by faith.
Three Part Plan
Phase 1 - Laying The Foundations
Purchasing the old Army Reserve Centre and transforming it into a space of worship.
The building was bought entirely through sangat donations and loans - over £1,400,000 was raised in 4 weeks without external institutions - purely community seva and trust.
Phase 2 - Building The Heart
Following the purchase of the site, the transformation construction began with focus on creating a divan hall, langar hall, classrooms, toilets, and accessibility routes.
The majority of the work was completed by sangat/volunteers. This includes, and is not limited to: building stages, sanding floors and laying the carpets - all with Shabad Gurbani playing and illuminating the atmosphere.
Phase 3 - Future
Developing the Gurdwara with projects focused on long term sustainability, purpose, and sangat projection.
Doing Things With Maryada (Code of Conduct)
Guru Nanak Gurdwara Camberley is a new institution which means things are able to done differently. We aim to run not as a business but as a Gurdwara which focuses on education and growth.
Gurbani Is Priceless
All paat and bani seva is offered without fixed charges, allowing sangat to contribute from the heart and one's ability.
Intact-Sanctity Of Guru Granth Sahib Ji's Darbar
Our space is preserved solely for worship and spiritual connection, never for commercial gain.
Maryada At The Heart Of Everything
The dignity, respect, and honour of Guru Sahib are always central to how we function and serve.
Leading Through Seva, Not Politics
Decisions are made through collective responsibility, humility, and Gurmat guidance, not elections or popularity.
A Lifelong Learning Community
We are committed to nurturing every aspect of life through education: Gurbani Santhiya, Punjabi, Tanthi Saaj, Gatka, wellbeing, parenting, outreach, leadership, and seva - growing Sikhs who live with wisdom, compassion, and purpose.
Thinking Generations Ahead
Guru Nanak Gurdwara Camberley is not just for today - it has been built with the next 100 years in mind. It exists not for us alone, but for our children and our children's children and their children. Every decisions that we made - spiritual, financial, or organisational - is guided by this belief.
We are committed to being a Gurdwara that:
-
Stands on gurmat principles.
-
Is driven through seva, accountability, and collective responsibility.
-
Remains spiritually strong, financially transparent and organisationally sustainable for future generations.
This is more than a project, it is a legacy of faith, unity, and foresight.
Come, be part of our story. Do seva, learn, teach, sing, sit, and grow - this story - it is still being written. . .
